REGO PARK, QUEENS — Jurors found a Rego Park pharmacy owner guilty of health care fraud and money laundering for a years-long scheme to bill Medicare for prescriptions he never filled, prosecutors announced Thursday.
After a four-day trial, a federal jury found Yuriy Barayev guilty of billing Medicare for hundreds of medications he never dispensed, then laundering the profits through a shell company owned by his wife, according to a news release.
Barayev ran the scheme from 2013 to 2015 and spent the Medicare money on himself, his family and close friends, federal prosecutors said.
His pharmacy, Woodhaven Rx, was at 62-06A Woodhaven Blvd., on the border of Rego Park and Middle Village.
Barayev, 45, faces up to 10 years’ prison time for health care fraud and up to 20 years for each of the seven money laundering charges included in his guilty verdict.
